Garry was born at home in Edmondsley on 22nd April 1970 to dad Tommy, mam Doreen & joining older brother John.
Initially he attended the school in the village and then later attended Fyndoune Comprehensive in the neighbouring village of Sacriston. Living in Edmondsley most of his life and spending time in surrounding villages even at a young age he was already surrounded by a large group of good friends, many of these friendships still carried on until he passed away.
Garry could have concentrated more at school but already at an early age his love for music and his beloved Sunderland featured heavily in life. As Garry got older some of his other interests included watching cricket both at grounds and on TV, motorbike racing where he regularly visited Silverstone and the Isle of Man to name a few, he even marshalled at knock hill when he was younger.
Garry held a season ticket from his mid teens at Roker Park & later at the SOL and followed Sunderland all over the country whether it be for league games or pre-season friendlies abroad. Sarah has no doubt he'd have been planning his Europe trips this year with his mates. Garry was always a very proud Sunderland supporter whether it be through the highs or lows they experienced over the years. Once a season started Garry lived for the buzz around every game: home or away, win, lose or draw. Garry was quite confident nearing the end of the 2024/25 season that Sunderland would win the playoff games and find themselves at Wembley, that much so,he and his mates where already booked up well in advance for the Final. Unfortunately Garry passed away suddenly the week before the last game of the season. The subsequent playoffs and final at Wembley although fantastic results where tinged with great sadness for all Garry's loved ones as he should have been there amongst everyone celebrating Sunderland's fantastic return to the Premier League. Garry would be very proud of how Sunderland has played on their return to the Premier League this season.
Garry had numerous jobs after leaving school, he didn't have great aspirations but thoroughly enjoyed the many years he worked as a plant hire controller, he enjoyed being able to help people, enjoyed the banter, etc. Following his death Sarah received quite a few messages from people who hadn't actually met Garry but over the years had spoke to him weekly, discussed the antics of the past weekends, music recommendations and generally enjoyed a bit banter and chat with Garry who said he would be a big miss throughout the plant hire community.
On the 22nd August 2003 Garry met Sarah, they became engaged and moved in together in 2006. From very early in the relationship they both knew that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, although never married they both idolised each other and over the years the bond between them just became stronger and stronger. Like all relationships they had their ups and downs but they were always there to support one another. They were each others rocks through difficult times especially in 2015 when Garry's dad passed away after a short illness and in 2017 when Sarah's mam died following a tough couple of years. Their love and support of each other was strengthened yet again in January 2025 when Garry was diagosed with a bleed behind one of his eyes & extremely high blood pressure Sarah was right their beside him making plans of what they both needed to do to reduce both the bleed and the blood pressure, following check ups in early April 2025 his bleed had reduced significantly and his blood pressure was greatly improved. As well as all that was going on with Garry in February 2025 their furbaby Mollie suddenly started having Seizures and regular fainting episodes, in March 2025 she was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Disease, both of them made the decision to cut back on joint time away from Mollie always ensuring that at least one of them was always there with her, focusing all their time on keeping Mollie as calm and comfortable as possible for as long as they possibly could. It just showed some of the love Garry and Sarah shared, they both knew they could get through anything as long as they had each other. Little did either of them know that that bond they both shared was going to be devastatingly broken very soon.
The week beginning 21st April 2025 started as normal, it was a week of highs for Garry & Sarah and extreme devastation for Sarah, Garry's family and friends. On the 22nd April 2025 Garry celebrated his 55th birthday, and both him and Sarah made plans for the weekend at home. On the 24th April 2025 Mollie had a check up and they got encouraging news that although Mollies condition couldn't be reversed the medication she was on was helping relieve her symptoms and making her more comfortable. On the 26th April 2025 they enjoyed a good day at home with good food, a few drinks to celebrate Garry's birthday, watched the boxing, a good weekend, Sarah retired to bed around 1am, Garry stayed up as he normally would to listen to music for a couple of hours, he retired to bed around 4am, where he woke Sarah and Mollie up. Sarah decided she was awake and got up with mollie so Garry could get to sleep , whilst she was going downstairs Garry said 'i'll see you soon, Love you' very much like any other weekend at home they shared. However, Sarah's world crumbled around her when she went upstairs at 10.50 am on Sunday 27th April 2025 and entered their bedroom and Garry never moved or reacted to her talking to him, she turned on the light and discovered Garry had suddenly passed away, he looked comfortable and peaceful (later it was found that Garry had died from a Coronary Artery Thrombosis, the Coroner declared Garry wouldn't have known anything and died peacefully in his sleep). Her whole life has changed in just a few small hours, the person who she would turn to in times like this was the person she was now without. The devastation and shock echoed through Garry's family, friends, work colleagues, acquaintances, neighbours and others who knew Garry through Sunderland or a music gigs. Sarah says the overwhelming amount of messages of support she received in the following weeks made her feel less alone following the loss of Garry. The bond that Sarah, Robert and Sharon now share is testament to the person Garry was and the relationship they each shared with him. Although even now the immense shock and devastation Sarah still feels every day, it is made a little easier by the support she has around her from family and friends and also due to the love Garry and her shared. Following Garry's death and in the loneliest times she felt the company and comfort from Furbaby Mollie, unfortunately on the 24th November 2025 Mollie grew tired and passed over the rainbow bridge to go find her dad and keep him company. The quietness in the house was unbearable and Sarah welcomed new furbaby into the home she shared with Garry on the 23rd December 2025, Sarah named her Poppy after Remembrance Day, a time in the year Garry always supported. Garry would absolutely adore Poppy and vice versa.
Sarah always jokingly described herself as a 'football widow' as from 2003 until 2020 the majority of weekends consisted of Garry following Sunderland. In between seasons etc, this was when they enjoyed holidays / trips away together to places like Bulgaria, Barcelona, Spain, Isle of Man to name a few. However, in march 2020 when COVID this all changed. They enjoyed weekends at home together with Mollie, just purely spending weekends together was a novelty, to pass the time of not being able to go far they had fun making up drinking games to run alongside quizzes, puzzles etc, both of them as competitive as the other. Garry's love of music was really awakened during COVID, where he found lots of new upcoming bands he enjoyed listening too. When COVID calmed down Garry found himself in the strange position of looking forward to following Sunderland all over the country again but now found a new love of spending weekends with Sarah and wanting to plan weekends away with her to see some of the bands he had found during COVID. If he could have been in 2 places at once he'd have been a very content man. So following COVID Garry didn't go to many away games instead regularly travelling to Manchester, London, Edinburgh, etc with Sarah to gigs or even just preferring to stay at home with Sarah and having a few drinks at home. Although no longer at away games, he still followed Sunderland either watching listening to the match or just checking scores regularly whilst away, Garry still attended all the home games at the SOL. The trips away with Sarah were cut down in February 2025 to ensure they were always at home with Mollie.
As previously mentioned Garry had a lot of very close friends, none more so than Robert, they were regularly described as 'two peas in a pod', you could guarantee where one of them was the other one wasn't far behind. The two of them were more like brothers than friends, they did mostly everything together. It was sometimes hard to tell where one of them stopped and the other started. Together they got up to a lot of mischief together home or away at the football or even just a weekend away with Sarah and Sharon (Roberts wife). Outside of football Garry, Sarah, Robert & Sharon would also enjoy little weekends away together. Sarah & Sharon never knew what sort of mischief would arise between Garry & Robert. When we were all planning the service following Garry's death , Sharon described Garry as our Social Butterfly', due to Garry always flirting from one person to another. She hit the nail on the head as no matter where he was, or if he knew people or not Garry could always be found taking to someone. He had a knack of making everyone feel welcome around him, even perfect strangers. Along with this quality Garry would also literally do anything for anybody, he would give his short off his back to anyone if it came to it.
Garry was always famously known for missing trains / buses back from away games or for even getting lost. Sarah says his sense of direction was questionable. One example and memory that always makes us smile is the time Garry and Robert went to watch a Cricket game at the Riverside in Chester-Le-Street. When leaving the ground, instead of following everyone else and heading back to the town centre they found themselves 3.5 miles in the wrong direction following the river. They can be seen on a video playing on a seesaw in a very drunken state haha. Whenever discussed around either of them they both just shrug their shoulders whilst saying 'alcohol had been taken'.
Garry went to a lot of away games organised by close friend Peter and the South West Sunderland Supporters Branch. For a Pre- season friendly trip to Dundee someone decided that both Garry and Robert could be trusted on an earlier train just the two of them, left alone with an abundance of cans of Stella between them. You can imagine what state the pair of them were found in when the rest of the branch arrived in Dundee and hour behind them ha,ha. When discussing getting a taxi to the ground Garry looked on Google maps he told others they could walk it as only ten minutes away. On the way the story goes that poor Lee found himself in the rather unfortunate position of having the pleasure of pushing / dragging both Garry & Robert up a rather steep hill to get to the ground.
There are literally hundreds of memories and stories that Sarah has heard and she has no doubt there is plenty more out there that she doesn't know, there's a lot of stories that Sarah simply can not share on this tribute page but it's these stories / memories that all Garry's family and friends get to have and look back on every time they think of Garry.
Sarah says she could literally write about Garry all day and that she has only covered a very small percentage of his life for this legacy page. But says she has to stop somewhere unfortunately.
Sarah just asks that everyone who knew Garry remembers him fondly and asks that you continue to share, laugh and smile at all the memories you all shared with him.
