Their story

More than a name and a date.

Martin Fletcher was born in Headington, Oxford in 1958 and carried the city with him throughout his life. He was proud of where he came from, proud of his family, and proud to support Oxford United through every high, low, promotion hope, cup tie and unforgettable afternoon following the U’s.

Football was more than a game to Martin. Oxford United was part of his routine, his conversations, his weekends and his memories. He would talk about the players, the grounds, the atmosphere, the old matches, and the moments that stayed with him for life. He loved the yellow and blue, the loyalty of the supporters, and the feeling that Oxford United belonged to the people who stood by it.

Martin had a way of making matchdays feel special. Whether it was a family gathering around the television, a trip to watch the U’s, or a phone call after the final whistle, he made everyone feel involved. He celebrated every goal with real joy, questioned every decision with quiet conviction, and always believed there was another good season just around the corner.

Away from football, Martin was known for his warmth, patience and humour. He was the kind of man people could rely on. He had time for others, always listened properly, and could make people smile with a dry comment, a familiar look, or one of his classic football opinions. His family meant everything to him, and he built a life full of love, memories and laughter.

To those who knew him, Martin was more than an Oxford United fan. He was a husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbour. His love for the U’s was just one part of a life filled with pride, kindness and character.

“Come on you Yellows.”
