Their story

More than a name and a date.

David Jones was born in Sunderland in 1952 and carried the city with him throughout his life. He was proud of where he came from, proud of his family, and proud to support Sunderland AFC through every high, low, promotion hope, cup memory and long journey home.

Football was more than a game to David. Sunderland was part of his routine, his conversations, his weekends and his memories. He would talk about the players, the atmosphere, the old grounds, the matches that mattered and the ones he said he wished he had forgotten — although he never really did.

The 1973 FA Cup win always had a special place in his heart. For David, it represented everything he loved about football: belief, loyalty, community, and the idea that anything could happen when people stood together. He loved that Sunderland story because it felt like Sunderland itself — proud, stubborn, full of heart, and never afraid of being the underdog.

Away from football, David was a family man first. He had time for people, a quick comment ready, and a way of making ordinary moments feel memorable. He loved a laugh, loved a proper cup of tea, loved talking football, and loved being surrounded by the people closest to him.

To his family, he was dependable, warm, funny and deeply loved. To his friends, he was loyal, straight-talking and always good company. To anyone who knew him, David was unforgettable.

This page is here to keep his memories together — the photographs, the stories, the favourite song, the football memories, and the words people still want to say. David will always be remembered with love, pride and a little bit of red and white.
